HOur Bank
In Peckham, the Hour Bank has grown out of the Local Exchange Trading Scheme (LETS) and has been successful in reaching out to more vulnerable groups including older people and refugees. The bank helps people give and receive services like shopping, cooking, singing lessons, car-lifts, cleaning, card-making and cafe food. Because so many members offered international cooking, the bank started a caf every Wednesday where members could meet and eat cheap, healthy food bought with their time credits. Both individuals and groups can join the Hour Bank.
Founding member Herbie earns credits playing piano in the caf and spends what he earns getting David to help him with his shopping: "The best thing I got out of joining is that I am now able to get my shopping done. David takes his time and gets exactly what I want; he's very good, he comes every Friday and we get on really well."
